Writing News + New Workshops

Hi friends,

If you’re getting this email, it’s because I count you amongst my friends, fam, and fans, my treasured former students, colleagues, and clients-- as someone cool I've connected with somehow, somewhere. And now I want to tell you about something new I’m building.

For years, I’ve kept most of my writing news, workshops, and creative projects scattered across Gmail, Instagram, and Substack. That's about to change.

This is my dedicated Kat O’Brien author email list—a space where I can share more about my writing and workshops that I'm offering, so we can stay connected, work together more, and for those of you just here to support me (thank you!) -- so you can keep on cheerleading. (Knowing you're rooting for me and believing in me really moves me and keeps me going. I need my people.)

And there’s a reason I’m doing this now.

The Dream. The Goal. The Deadline.

I’m working towards being ready to release my first novel next year.

If you're following me on Substack and Instagram, you know that this debut novel has been in the works for awhile. Like, four years. This year, I made 100% progress from endlessly revising five chapters to drafting and endlessly revising five more. This book is halfway done, y'all!

Although I didn't finish the manuscript over the summer before school started, I'm not giving up yet. Summer doesn't officially end until Libra season kicks off, and the way this Super El Niño's shaping up, summer may never end. It's definitely giving Groundhog Day, and I'm here for it.

My novel is a comedic and heartfelt what-if beach read about a failed writer mom who gets the opportunity to rewrite her life and of course, hijinx ensue. (If you're wondering, is this auto-fiction? and will there be wild celeb appearances, an exorcism, and spycraft? The answers are yes and obviously.)

It’s also a story about what happens when we stop trying to optimize our lives—and start living the one we actually have.

So: 2027 is the goal.

I’m making that goal bold and writing a newsletter about it because for me, the best way to make something real is to tell everyone I'm doing it. I also wanted to build my author newsletter. I talk about the walk as I'm walking and talking. It's improvised, I'm playing it by ear, but when I'm living my life out loud, I make it happen -- and I'll be sharing the journey here.

And while I’m at it…

I have some workshops this fall that I think you might enjoy.

Kat O'Brien

I write unhinged existential comedy and coach other writers to find their voice and tell the stories only they can tell. For the past twenty-five years, I've been applying romcom logic to real life and inevitably, hijinx ensues. My newsletter is reliably inconsistent, spontaneous, and hopefully makes you smile.
